Regensburg Phoenix send a defensive warning before GFL Week 1

Regensburg beat Augsburg 7-0 in a preseason test, giving the new GFL South season one more team to watch before the May 9 kickoff.

Regensburg Phoenix did not need a shootout to make their point before GFL Week 1. A 7-0 preseason win over Augsburg Centurions is not a title prediction, but it does say something useful: the defense is ready to travel, and the run game around Abana Nebechi gives them a stable identity before the real schedule starts.

Preseason results can be noisy, especially in Germany where teams often use these games to test depth, imports and systems rather than chase margin. Still, a shutout is a clean signal. Regensburg opening the GFL season on May 9 against Pforzheim Wilddogs now carries more intrigue because Phoenix have at least shown they can win an uncomfortable, low-scoring game.

For Pigskin Europe, the bigger question is whether GFL South has another awkward opponent in the mix. The established names still define the division, but early-season German football is often shaped by which clubs arrive organized before everyone else reaches full rhythm. Regensburg have given us a reason to watch their first league game closely.
