Graz Giants win Austrian Bowl XLI and end an 18-year title wait

Graz Giants beat Danube Dragons 16-14 in Austrian Bowl XLI at Maria Enzersdorf, using a second-half defensive shutout and two fourth-quarter Leo Liptak field goals to claim their first Austrian title since 2008.

Quick read

Graz Giants are Austrian champions again. The Giants beat Danube Dragons 16-14 in Austrian Bowl XLI on 25 July at the Datenpol Arena in Maria Enzersdorf, ending an 18-year wait for a senior Austrian title and lifting the club's championship count to eleven.

This was not a scoreboard fireworks final. It was a defensive title game, and that made it more interesting. Danube led 14-10 at halftime after two Walter Kuhlenkamp touchdowns, including a pass to Uzay Nafile, but Graz kept the game alive through Bastian Steinmair's first-quarter touchdown drive and Leo Liptak's field goal before the break. After halftime, the Giants defense shut the Dragons out.

How Graz turned it

The final flipped through field position, patience and kicks. Liptak cut the deficit to 14-13 in the fourth quarter, then hit the go-ahead field goal with about two minutes left. From there, Graz needed one more defensive stand, and the defense delivered. ORF reported that Kuhlenkamp was intercepted twice, with the second turnover coming late in the third quarter and helping keep Danube from rebuilding control.

That detail matters because the matchup had been sold as the league's two best defenses. The final played that way after the opening drives. Danube had the better start, Graz made the cleaner late adjustments, and the Giants were the only team to score after halftime.

Why the title matters

The result changes the Austrian Football League season from a Danube regular-season story into a Graz postseason story. Danube finished the regular season 8-2 and beat Vienna Vikings 35-17 in the semifinal. Graz had to take the harder route: 7-3 in the regular season, then a 70-19 Wild Card win over Salzburg Ducks, a 41-6 road semifinal win at Prague Black Panthers and finally a two-point Austrian Bowl win over the top seed.

For Pigskin Europe readers outside Austria, the path is the hook. Prague Black Panthers were the defending Austrian title story in 2024 and had finished 8-2 this year, yet Graz removed them from the bracket in Prague. Danube then looked like the clean favorite in Maria Enzersdorf, but the Giants defense turned the second half into a title claim.

Steinmair, Liptak and the defense

Steinmair's story gives the title extra weight: an Austrian quarterback leading Graz back to the top in his first full season as starter is a better headline than a generic upset. ORF named Steinmair the final MVP, while AFBÖ's recap carried his postgame line that "defense wins championships." That was not just a quote; it was the shape of the game.

Liptak supplied the points that decided it. His second-quarter field goal kept Graz close, and his two fourth-quarter kicks produced every point after halftime. In a 16-14 final, that is the difference between a nice defensive effort and a trophy.

Wider Austrian picture

The Dragons now carry two straight painful Austrian Bowl losses: 27-17 to Vienna Vikings on the field in 2025, before the title was later awarded to Danube administratively, and 16-14 to Graz this year. That does not erase their season. It does make the next Austrian cycle much sharper, because Danube, Graz, Prague, Vienna Vikings and Vienna Knights all have credible reasons to believe they belong near the top.

The Ladies Bowl also stayed in Tirol. Swarco Raiders Tirol beat Salzburg Ducks 30-20 for a third straight women's title, giving the Austrian final day a second dynasty note even while the men's trophy moved back to Graz.
